Why We’re Betting on MicroCloud for Edge Deployments

Canonical’s MicroCloud brings clustered compute, storage, and networking to small footprints — and it’s a natural fit for edge and branch infrastructure.

Not every workload belongs in a hyperscale data center. For branch offices, retail sites, and edge locations, MicroCloud offers a compelling middle ground: a fully clustered private cloud that runs on as few as three nodes.

What MicroCloud actually is

MicroCloud is Canonical’s opinionated, low-touch private cloud built on LXD, Ceph, and OVN. It packages virtualization, distributed storage, and software-defined networking into a single, self-healing cluster that you can stand up in minutes rather than days.

Where a full OpenStack deployment makes sense at scale, MicroCloud targets the small-to-medium footprint — the kind of environment where you want cloud-style resilience without a dedicated platform team babysitting it.

Why it matters for edge

Edge sites have a hard constraint: limited hardware and limited hands. MicroCloud’s automatic clustering and built-in high availability mean a node can fail and workloads keep running, with no manual intervention at the site.

Because it’s built on the same LXD foundation many teams already use for containers and VMs, the operational model is familiar. You’re not learning an entirely new stack — you’re scaling a known one out to more locations.

How we’re using it

We’ve been running MicroCloud in our lab across a three-node cluster, validating live migration, storage failover, and OVN networking under simulated node loss. The results have been solid enough that we’re now recommending it for specific edge and branch scenarios with our customers.
